Dear Subscribers,
Greetings!
New large painting.
The setup. This is my kids' plastic ball wrapped in aluminum foil. It's
about the size of a large grapefruit. I wrapped it and rewrapped it
around a dozen times before I was satisfied with the pattern in the
foil. I made a stand out of wire so that the ball could "float". The
stand is on a light-colored wooden plank to provide strong reflected
light on the underside:

There's a link to a fun gif animation of all the stages further down in
the newsletter, but for now I'll take you through it step by step.
First stage. Large 30x30 inch panel. I toned the entire panel with red
before starting, just for fun. I knew the painting would have lots of
cool greens and blues. I thought there might be an opportunity to let
some of that contrasting red shine through. And even though I ended up
covering it completely, it did make the beginning stages more
interesting to look at:

This is all knife. So far just my large Holbein MX-4. The sphere itself
is all freehand at this stage.

Squinting, tying to capture the basic pattern of light and dark and
color.

Darker darks, and adding more specific shapes to the highlight:

Starting to create some foil crinkles:

With a painting this size, the work required is amplified--The sheer
volume of paint necessary to cover areas makes the color mixing and the
application process much slower.

Gradually adding detail:

Back to the main highlight. Getting more precise and specific:

More crinkles. Smaller crinkles:

At this stage I want to calm down the background to give more focus to
the chaotic foil. At the same time I want to see if my circle is
actually a circle. I find the center and use a pin with string to
check--I was really damn close...I love to impress myself. Lols.

Adding floating grapes of questionable size and shape, obviously:

More:

Adding water droplets to make the grapes wet, and beginning on grape
reflections in the foil. Seeing as how I didn't really have floating
mutant grapes on hand to reflect into the foil, this took some doing:

Next, I refine everything, including background (which I now alter with
a large bristle brush).
And the finished painting "Liwyatan" (30x30):

WORKSHOP
I've been on a hiatus from teaching for over a year. I'm really looking
forward to gradually getting back in action, and excited to visit
NOH/WAVE for the first time. My workshops will continue to be rare (and
only West coast due to childcare logistics) for couple of years yet.
