Dear Subscribers,
Greetings!
My workshop in Scottsdale went well. This was my first time at
Scottsdale Artist's School, and I loved it. Already scheduled to return
next year (first weekend in May)!

Parallel Journey
I competed in my second Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament! While the past
10 months of bjj hasn't necessarily effected my art, there are
parallels that help to remind myself why I paint. The sheer joy of
learning, improving, and experimenting. Having a challenge in front of
me and trying my best (win or lose). The need to focus on the task at
hand.
This was a round-robin submission-only tournament, and I competed in
two divisions (181-195lbs Gi White belt Masters 35 ; and 188-202lbs
No-Gi Adult Beginner). Out of 6 matches total I had 4 wins, 1 draw, and
1 loss. I learned so much from this experience. Honestly, without my
awesome coach there giving advice at every match, it's possible I may
have lost them all. My biggest lesson (after stiff, exhausting draw)
was to stay as loose and relaxed as possible. To not fight strength
with strength. It always comes back to the quote from Dune, doesn't it?:
"Fear is the mind-killer."
First place in my Gi division (doing something strange with my mouth
guard):

A New Medium
Speaking of learning...
I've been wanting to try out gouache for a long time. I saw an
opportunity to possibly get some overlap between painting time and
parenting time: Gouache is a water medium like watercolor--easy to set
up, clean up, and I opted for some cadium-free colors to make it safer
around the kids. My new supplies:

I had some painting time with the kids (they used watercolors). Here is
a first gouache experiment:

So far, I'm really liking gouache. The speed and convenience is great.
I'm going to need to get used to everything drying matte. With oil, you
put the paint down and that's pretty much how the final product will
look (after varnish). But with gouache, everything looks a little
different a few minutes after the brushstrokes (when the water dries up
and sinks in).

NEW WIP
Here is a current work in progress. The painting has been coming in
fits and starts, but it is getting close.

JUST SOLD:
"Sacrament" was a part of the Paint It Black Exhibition at the famed
Black Anchor Tattoo (Hollywood gallery location). It sold opening night
as a first ever acquisition for a new collector. I love that.
