Dear Subscribers,
Greetings.
New painting. More waffle iron. First stage. Loose block-in of darks
with burnt umber, then carving away with background:

Next stage. Starting to define the iron, feeling out the perspective.
Image 3342500
Next stage. Sharpening up that perspective, adding highlights to get a
sense of the full value range.
Image 3342503
Next stage. Getting closer to making waffles.
Image 3342505
Next stage. More details.
Image 3342508
Next stage. Feeling pretty solid with start of the iron. Need to get to
the rest of the painting asap.
Image 3342509
Next stage. I had a loose mental image for the
apparition/creature/dream emanating from the iron. I start to play.
Having fun.

Next stage. I'm looking at photos of swallow wings for reference. I
love watching swallows dart and maneuver at low altitude, it's amazing.
I'm also playing with shapes and textures that are reminiscent of your
friendly neighborhood xenomorph.

Next stage. Painting elements that are purely from imagination is one
of my greatest joys and is the reason why I still love painting.
Image 3342512
Next stage. Back to the iron. Adding the cord in a way that engages the
bottom of the painting to provide the illusion of depth and space.
Image 3342513
Next stage. Developing and refining the background. I want dream-like
motion. Obscuring the darks in the rear of the waffle iron to increase
the sense of perspective.

And the finished painting below, "Ghost in the Machine"
(24x12 oil on panel).

(The way the final
image below was processed for the newsletter is awfully soft/muddy.)

NEW PODCAST INTERVIEW
I had a lot of fun talking with Youngman Brown on the awesome YOUR
CREATIVE PUSH podcast. We did it around 6 months ago, but due to a YCP
hiatus, the episode is coming out just now. Let me know how you like
it. If you haven't listened to YCP and you are a creative person,
definitely subscribe! It's always inspiring.

Frames!
I've been using frames almost exclusively from Stephen at Artframes.com
for a decade. Look at this beautiful frame I ordered for "Behind A
Moonlit Corner" (which will also be at Contemporary Realism
in December). I highly recommend this framer. Check them out
