Dear Subscribers,

Greetings!

Recent news: My painting "Small Vessel"
  will be in the OPA
National Juried Exhibition at Devin Galleries
  in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

In the figure drawing class I'm taking, our March model opted to resign
on the third drawing day. Too bad we couldn't continue... I was liking
my block in:

Now we have a new model. Here is a portion of the work in progress:

New still-life! (back to brushes for this one)

And the finished painting, "Two Handles"
  (9x12):

This is the first time that I've painted an object loaded with meaning
(the two-handled cup is a family heirloom). Usually my objects are just
objects, and I try to give them some life...some mystery or drama. The
cup already has a life, so I was unsure of how to approach the painting.
I reminded myself it was just a painting and I had the freedom to try
anything. I'm happy with the result.

I've been interested in the quality of edges and what they can do in a
painting. At the risk of over-explaining (oh horror of horrors), I
wanted to add atmosphere to this scene with a sense of motion or
'static'(like a fluctuating radio or tv signal). This guy
(whose art I first saw in the film
Synecdoche, New York) does some fascinating stuff with figures and
motion.

Until next week,
