Dear Subscribers,

Greetings!

Two new still-lifes this week. After the recent binge of
light-background paintings, I was in the mood for some darkness.

The first one I forgot to take progress photos of--here is the final
piece..

"Self-Peeling Clementine on Derivative Field"
  (9x12)

And another one:

The setup:

First stage. Block-in:

Next stage. Knowing that the tangerine and lemon slice would be my
center of interest, I begin painting there first:

Next stage:

Next stage. I start using a palette knife to apply thick paint to the
fruit:

Next stage. I decide to pump up the glow on the lemon slice and reduce
for the tangerine. I start shaping the kettlebell highlight with a
palette knife. In this stage you see I have a red light in the shadow of
the cup but I decide it is competing with the color of the fruits, so I
decide to ditch it in favor of a stronger orange reflection (as seen in
final)

And the finished painting: "Kettlebell & Citrus"
  (8x8):
