I've sent three paintings to Gallery 1261 for their upcoming 20th Anniversary Show. It will be an amazing group show, and I'm thankful to have been represented by this top notch gallery for half of its history!

New Painting

New painting from imagination. Starting fully abstract. No preconceived ideas. A leap of faith:

My focus is a controlled area of dark against a large area of light. A small area of red heat against a cool blueish background:

Building shapes until I find an abstract composition that feels interesting. This ends up being the final stage of abstraction:

Entering the representational phase. I interpret the focal dark mass as some sort of dark red glass with a candle inside. I choose a position of my light source (see highlights). The table ledge is already suggested there, but at this point I'm not sure of the material:

The abstract shapes in the bottom half of the painting help with my decision to make the ledge/table a draped cloth. I continue to define the objects on the table, continuing the candle theme:

More refinement of the focal candle and development of the surrounding objects and cloth:

I spend time intensifying the light background around the focal candle until it feels right. The center drapery/fold gets cleaned up a bit. I liked it messy, but for the sake of the overall painting, I had to change it:

There was something missing. I remembered to loosen up, creatively and physically. The final stages were a mix of refinement and mystery. Here is the finished painting:
