| Dear Subscribers,
 Greetings!

I am the December judge for the the Boldbrush Painting Competition.

 Awesome! It will be fun.

 New still life.
 The setup:
While setting this up I'm thinking of a geometric treatment of the background to reinforce my choice of the plum as the center of interest.

 First stage:
I decide to ditch the other plum and go for grapes instead.

 Next stage:
Painting imaginary grapes is one of the great pleasures of life.

And the finished painting, "Red Plum" (8x8):

And the animation for the above progression:

I've decided to compile all of my painting animations in one place. New page on the site: ANIMATIONS.

I did another paint-along demo in my still life class. It didn't result in a finished painting, but still time well spent.
 The setup:

 First stage:
 Blocking in shape of shadow.

 Next stage:
Our goal was to make the mandarin orange the center of interest, so we painted that first.

This is where we finished at the end of class.

 Next stage:
 I kept working on it.

 Next stage:
I decide that the other pieces of orange and the blue cloth aren't working for me. I don't like them in this composition.

 Next stage:
 Where I terminated the painting.

This was a situation where I had a clear vision for the painting at the beginning but it didn't work out. Usually when I fail a painting it's because I didn't have a clear vision. This time was different. It didn't work. It felt rote and uninspired, and I lost the connection with it.  To finish it would have been an exercise in busy-work, and I would not have been proud of it. It felt like being in a rut. Still it was good painting time and good practice. Moving on.

 Until next week,
