| Dear Subscribers,
 Greetings!

I'm currently in the midst of teaching a 3-day workshop to a really awesome group of artists. Details next week.

Egads, I spy my name on this page. Details pending.

Last Monday: another paint-along day in my still life class.
 The setup:

Light coming from left but my focus is the onion on right, so I need intentionally tone down the objects on left. Similar to the challenges in "Aluminum & Scarlet".

 First stage:

Next, this was our end-point in class:

 Next. I continue:

I decide to wipe it out because the composition isn't compelling enough to continue. I don't buy it.  It smacks of boring. The onion ceased to interest me---not a good sign for the main focal point, obvi. This is a case of trying to force focus on an object I'm not genuinely excited to paint. Perhaps I was rushed/careless in the setup because it was for a class demo...but that's a super lame excuse. Every attempt should be planned for excellence. This is in contrast to my current demo from this weekend workshop--I began very excited about my primary focus. More details in next issue.

 Until next week,
