This peeled grapefruit is pretty tight compared to much of my work. My
tolerance for tightness has gradually been changing over the years. I
always found the idea of painting "photographic" really off-putting.
Like, what's the point. But I'm realizing there is a way to be tight in
a way that showcases life without imitating photography-- and not many
artists can successfully achieve this. This really hit home for me when
I saw the Sprick show
 . He can paint very
tight but the result has nothing to do with being photographic. His
paintings are beyond photography- they express a fantastical but
revealing view of reality, an achievement not possible by photo, and
leave room for a huge range of emotional interpretation that is, again,
not possible with a photo.
Anyway, this has inspired me to observe my subjects with greater care
and patience. Along with that comes a need to be more fluid with how I
use my tools. I ask myself what the best tool for each job is. Is this
a time for a brush? A knife? I little tiny brush? I'm releasing some of
my old self-imposed dogma.

 

I've started a new still life involving saran wrap and leaves. Here is
