Image 1630631 Dear Subscribers, My recent workshop at the Jack Richeson Gallery & School in Wisconsin was great. This seems to be happening a lot. I've never taught a workshop that I didn't thoroughly enjoy, and every single time I am impressed by the commitment and stamina that the students bring. Anyway, more on the Richeson trip below. First, some other items. My painting "The Fat Of The Land" was awarded Best of Show in the Boldbrush Painting Competition (February). It is currently on display at Abend Gallery in Denver. I'll be talking more about this in an upcoming newsletter. For now, behold: Image 1726287 _____ I love my galleries. Both Gallery 1261 and RS Hanna Gallery put my work in the April issue of American Art Collector magazine, on newsstands now. Pretty damn cool. That's good company.) _____ RICHESON If you're an artist, you already know this. But for those who don't know, Jack Richeson & Co is a well-regarded art supply company. They also happen to have a gallery and school in the same building. I got a personal tour of the warehouse/factory. That was cool. Here are some pictures from the workshop. Explaining something. You'll notice that the values of the forward metal object (left) are altered in order to allow focus on the pitcher. My workshops are all about creating focus. Image 1725451 Image 1725442 Demo with Superior Metal "Demo with Superior Metal" 9x12 During my tour of the gigantic warehouse, I got to see where they actually manufacture Richeson paint. I learned that they produce the paint in small batches to ensure quality and consistency. That's really nice. I now have some of their paints at home and I'm trying them out on my newest painting. Image 1725452 How I store used paint in the freezer, btw. How I store paint in the freezer, btw. Image 1725455 So far I'm enjoying the paint. It will take some time before I have a solid opinion, but it seems like great stuff, especially for the price. Good consistency and pigment. I'm particularly liking the cadmium red scarlet. Can't get much better. One exception is the cadmium orange. In my opinion it is weak. I prefer a much stronger orange. More orangey. Also this particular tube is really soupy, but that might be a batch issue. Honestly there is only one cad orange that I'm liking, and it is WN Artist's Oils. Some other popular brands of cad orange are crazy looking...almost neon...and way too red. WNAO cad orange is just right. The titanium white was fine, on par with other decent whites, but lately I've been gravitating towards Permalba Original white because of Jonathan Linton's famous White Test , introduced to me by my artist friends in Virginia. Basically it stays more white over time. That is good. Also it has a good feel to it. Heavy and opaque. It has some body, and it stacks well. Linton's White Test Linton's White Test But I digress. Overall I am impressed by Richeson's quality paint and I will likely end up making some of their colors a part of my regular arsenal. I recommend. _____ ON THE EASEL Image 1725453 This is the setup for the painting currently in progress. The last two weeks have been slow in the creative department. False starts. Sometimes I'm sure I'll never have a good idea ever again. And then I'm back. It's a funny thing. These things ebb and flow. Keep showing up and remember to ride the waves. If a week of false starts is what it takes to keep going, then so be it. Like so many other difficult pursuits, painting is a battle of attrition. This current painting is almost done (I think) but to show you a progress shot at this time would somehow throw a wrench in my flow, I can feel it. It's at a delicate spot of either working or not. I guess you'll find out in the next newsletter. _____ UN|REALISM Some framing action for my upcoming online event! Image 1725456 I have added a new button to the UN|REALISM "About" page.
