Dear Subscribers,
Greetings.
Here is the demo from my recent workshop in Purcellville, Virginia!
The setup:

In the workshop I explained my plans for strategically creating focus.
The physical setup is just a tool you use to make a painting, so there
is tons of freedom and room for interpretation.

I used a mixture of brush and knife.

During my workshops I often do smaller demos of specific things on the
side. Here I painted two types of grapes from imagination using a direct
alla prima approach:

And I demonstrated painting a vessel wrapped in aluminum foil. There are
so many aspects to be found in an exercise like this: painting metal,
extreme contrast, lost edges, creating the illusion of detail with an
alla prima approach, knife-painting, temperature control.

Over the past few years teaching has become an important part of my
journey as an artist. It is fulfilling in ways I did not fully expect,
and has forced me to refine my own creative process while becoming less
dogmatic in my views on methodology. Artists gotta stick together. We
bring each other up. I hope you can join me.

Hey, speaking of demos, check out this eye-candy. The owner of my recent
demonstration from the Whidbey Island workshop just sent me this awesome
picture of the painting in an amazing Stafford frame. If you've never
heard of Stafford frames, they are works of art in themselves,
meticulously handcrafted by one guy . I
hear the wait for one of these masterpieces can be very long. Anyway,
thank you Tanya!

JUNE 12 - JULY 3
This big show in Denver just opened on Friday! Perfect opportunity to go
back and reveal some of the work process that went into these two
paintings from my UNrealism project.
A cropped portion of my raw reference photo, before lots of photo
manipulation and experimentation. Thanks to my generous wife. My muse.
