Image 1630631 Dear Subscribers, Greetings! Brace yourself. This is going to be a loooong newsletter. Might as well make some coffee while you wait for all the pictures to load. Seriously... depending on your internet speed you might even have time to bake muffins too. _____ I was recently a guest on John Dalton's excellent podcast. He asked some great questions and it was an enjoyable chat. Check out Episode 53 - The Art of Now with David Cheifetz on his website or subscribe in iTunes ! Image 2064504 Image 2078904 _____ The opening reception for my 3-Person Exhibition at Gallery 1261 was awesome! To those who were able to come out, Thank you so much. Image 2084411 The show catalog was rather sexy. The gallery is still selling it HERE. Image 2084415 As promised in my instagram post, here below are the progress photos for the two largest figure paintings in the show. _____ Here are the progress photos for "Angel of Creation" (40x30): Image 2084354 When working this large it always surprises me how much time and paint is required to fill the panel. Image 2084355 Working with larger brushes to make progress. (Filbert bristles) Image 2084357 Feeling out the background. Searching. I know I want an ethereal feel... misty.. ghostly. Image 2084358 Image 2084359 Refining all over. Image 2084361 Wings start to take shape. Keeping them high key. Scaling up from normal size bird references, amalgamating into something convincing. An interesting challenge. Image 2084362 Finally, the flrrbl enters. Image 2084364 And the finish: Angel Of Creation Angel Of Creation It was so awesome to see this in the gallery, in well-lit glory, hung in a place of honor on the central wall. Very satisfying. _____ And here are the progress photos for "Pillar Infinite" (36x18): Image 2084383 Image 2084384 These beginning stages can be a lot of fun. Image 2084385 Image 2084386 Some of the thickest paint I've ever applied with a brush. Lots of straight paint in here without medium. Image 2084387 Image 2084389 Image 2084390 Refining all over. Image 2084391 Image 2084392 Searching for the background. Image 2084393 Image 2084394 And the finish: Pillar Infinite Pillar Infinite _____ Two awesome workshops in May: One in Denver at Gallery 1261 and one in Lindale Texas at Maureen Killaby's school, yet again! First, Denver. Here is the back room in the gallery, normally used as secondary hanging space: Image 2084398 Early in the morning, just me and the cat. I was accepted as a non-threat and treat-giver: Image 2084401 Physical setup for the first demo: Image 2081853 This was a knife demo. Image 2081865 And the finish: Wizard (Demonstration) Wizard (Demonstration) _____ NEXT WORKSHOP I'm cutting back a bit on workshops and travel these days so there are currently only 2 scheduled. The next one is: Image 1661904 Image 2081837 Still Life Composition and Painting with Knife and Brush August 23-26 (4 days) $600 And as with all my workshops, this is limited to 10 students max. REGISTER New testimonial from the Denver workshop: "Outstanding workshop. David is as gifted a teacher as he is an artist. If he wasn't demoing he was circulating and giving one on one guidance to each student the entire time. Very patient. Very helpful. One student had been to 15 workshops (all very well known artists) and said this one was easily the best. Enough said." -Lee Schafer. Thanks Lee! :) _____ New painting! Stages: Image 2084333 Very loose start. How liberating. Image 2084336 Image 2084338 More and more my painting process has become a journey of exploration. Searching, testing, trying to find the way. Image 2084339 Notice I changed the shadow colors in the face to blue. You don't know until you try. That's the beauty of such a forgiving medium. Image 2084340 It started as wings...then something else came to me. Image 2084341 And below is the finished painting, "Heartstrings" (12x16, $2700), debuting in Figurative II at Gallery 1261 June 17th.
