Image 1630631 Dear Favorite Subscribers, Happy New Year! Thank you for continuing to follow my art as it develops (some of you for years and years). I hope to surprise you (in a good way) with my paintings this year. I've been hammering away in preparation for a show this spring (details soon). So there are paintings that I've teased but not yet fully revealed. In some ways this has bothered me....it's against my nature to "hoard" my work after it is finished. So in the next newsletter I'll begin to reveal some cool stuff. You may or may not have noticed a lack of fully finished paintings during the last 6 months or so, and if you did, thanks for sticking it out. The first ever cityscape workshop (sold out) went well. A new projector was handy for both the Photoshop portion of class as well as the painting demonstration. The students produced really nice stuff in only 2 days. Demoing: Image 2253256 The demonstration: Image 2253257 After class I continued to develop this demo into a fully finished painting. I'll show you soon. _____ BRUSHES OF DOOM PODCAST Image 2253274 This week I'll be chatting with Estevan for the Brushes Of Doom Podcast (for reals this time, we had technical difficulties on our first attempt a while back). If you'd like to submit any questions for me to answer on air, email them by Tuesday and I'll forward to BOD. _____ THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS Skip this section if you just wanted to see pretty pictures or art stuff. I don't make new year's resolutions, but I do periodically add things to my toolbox. Creating art is obviously a big part of my life, but the results are really dependent on my physical/mental well-being. It is hard to grow as an artist if you don't take care of yourself. Besides lifting heavy things, here are some resources I use to optimize life. Maybe you'll like them too: Image 2253291 Don't need to say much about the War of Art. I've only been talking about it ad nauseam since 2009. You're probably sick of it, lols. Potentially life changing stuff for a person who is ready to hear it. A kick in the ass. I like to open it randomly for inspiration. All of Pressfield's books are great. Image 2253292 "Psshhh, what?" Hear me out: I first read The Power of Now in 2013. Again, this can be a life changing book, but only if you already have a deep inner craving for some sort of transformation, and not everyone has this need or impulse. I was actively searching and had read other insightful but inferior books in the same genre. When I read it, wave after wave of self-understanding crashed over me. Not a day goes by that I don't use what I learned here (some days more successfully than others...the constant trying is the point). On the art-specific side, things also improved: my ability to enter the zone, paint longer and more intentionally, and teach patiently and effectively. Image 2253301 And my latest thing. This is a picture of Wim Hof. For the past three weeks I've been using the Wim Hof breathing method (20-30min) as a daily practice. It is now a habit, and I've got no reason to stop. The mental AND physical effects are intense. This one is backed by real science, no woo-woo here. I've been doing cold exposure for years, but the breathing method alone is the core tool (no cold necessary). Try it... breathing... is free! If you want to learn more, he's been on a bunch of podcasts (Tim Ferris, Joe Rogan, Dr. Rhonda Patrick, etc) and here is an awesome Vice documentary . _____ UPCOMING WORKSHOPS 1/21/2017 - 1/22/2017 CITYSCAPE COMPOSITION & PAINTING My home studio in Seattle (Ballard) 2 day weekend workshop Limited to 8 students (2 spots left) Info and Registration 3/4/2017 - 3/5/2017 STILL LIFE COMPOSITION & PAINTING My home studio in Seattle (Ballard) 2 day workshop, Sat-Sun Limited to 6 students Info and Registration 5/17/2017 - 5/20/2017 CITYSCAPE COMPOSITION & PAINTING (4-DAY) Maureen Killaby School, Lindale TEXAS DESCRIPTION AND SUPPLY LIST TO REGISTER, PLEASE CONTACT: Maureen Killaby mkillaby@suddenlink.net (903) 830-6694 (this is already nearly sold out, act soon) _____ NEW VIDEO TUTORIAL WATCH THE TRAILER: Image 2234670 NOW AVAILABLE Image 2253223 Painting The Unreal Cityscape with David Cheifetz Master artist David Cheifetz takes you through the journey of composing and creating a dramatic cityscape oil painting from beginning to end.
