Greetings!
Two new still-lifes this week. After the recent binge of light-background paintings, I was in the mood for some darkness.
The first one I forgot to take progress photos of--here is the final piece..
"Self-Peeling Clementine on Derivative Field" (9x12)

The setup:

First stage. Block-in:

Next stage. Knowing that the tangerine and lemon slice would be my center of interest, I begin painting there first:

Next stage:

Next stage. I start using a palette knife to apply thick paint to the fruit:

Next stage. I decide to pump up the glow on the lemon slice and reduce for the tangerine. I start shaping the kettlebell highlight with a palette knife. In this stage you see I have a red light in the shadow of the cup but I decide it is competing with the color of the fruits, so I decide to ditch it in favor of a stronger orange reflection (as seen in final)
