Greetings. Three new paintings to show you.

The setup. This photo was taken after the painting was complete...by then the plum had darkened:

I wanted to shorten the value range of the pitcher in the foreground to make it ghostly, and to let the color of the plum dominate. This reversal of aerial perspective can be interesting.

Everything is greenish/cool, so the plum is the odd man out.

And the finished painting, "Polarity" (9x12):

What we have here is a case of dual focus, but in different ways. That's how I see it. The plum flanked by green is one focus (by way of saturated color and dark darks) and the pitcher is another focus (by way of vertical size and ghostly interest). I like that these compete for my attention in different ways. I can see how either could be primary depending on the viewer. For example, from a distance the plum grouping dominates unquestionably. Up close things are different. I find myself examining the streaks and edges of the pitcher.

And a small still life. The setup:

This one painted very thick.

Then I ate it.

I kept reducing the amount of green in the cloth. I decided to calm everything down so that the apple could be more powerful.

And the finished painting, "What Mattered Most" (9x6):

Cycles. I had the sudden need to paint a face.

First stage. It begins with the intention to create a very subtle/calm painting.

Right here there was a shift in my strategy. Seen above, the colors are very gentle, the warms are slight and distributed around the figure. Below, I decided to contract the warms to only one place and to make them more powerful.

Refining and developing. You'll notice as the value transitions become more refined, the effect is more feminine.

Creating the extreme warmth in the eyes was THE aha moment for me in this painting. When I tried it and it worked, the whole painting came together.
