This approach would not work well for painting from a live model. But when model time is not an issue, it's a really exciting approach. I find that it encourages a lot of early experimentation. I can focus on overall effect of value and color very soon.

This was painted for "Small Works" at Gallery 1261, opening October 2nd! Apparently when Gallery 1261 instagrammed "Spirit", it became their all-time most favorited gram EVER! WAT.

My paintings are always based on one simple visual idea first, then more elements, motivations, and details evolve from that. Mango and old staplers, both beautiful in their own way.
